What is Wati?

Wati is a chat automation platform designed to grow your business on WhatsApp. Likewise, you can also create chat automations on Instagram and Facebook. Key features of Wati include:

  • Easy-to-use Flow Builder
  • Built-in team inbox (Wati’s live chat)
  • AI knowledge base trained on your data
  • Collect data
  • WhatsApp broadcasts and sequences
  • Integration with Zapier

Wati Homepage

It lets businesses and individuals automate their conversations, engage with customers and improve their marketing.

How does Wati work?

In Wati, you have a few tabs where you can manage your Wati account from:

  1. Team Inbox – Wati’s live chat
  2. Broadcast – Used for sending WhatsApp broadcasts
  3. Contacts – Overview of people who talked with your chatbot
  4. Automations – Where you handle your bot automations and auto-replies
  5. Analytics
  6. Ads

Wati Interface

The key tab is Automations. Here, you can set up your Wati chatbot automations.

When you get started with automations, you need to set up Rules. Rules are the center of Wati automations and determine how your bot responds. For example, if you receive a WhatsApp message and it contains “order status”, you can create a reply.

Wati Incoming Message

Then, you can reply in three ways:

  1. Chatbot – In Wati, they’re called Chatbots, but they’re actually chatbot flows
  2. WhatsApp Flows – These are forms in WhatsApp
  3. KnowBot – AI Agent of Wati (I will cover this later in the AI section)

When you get started with chatbot flows, Wati offers a flow builder. Here, you can simply add blocks and connect these to each other to create your flow. This is pretty easy to use and allows you to create a chatbot fast:

Wati Flow Builder

You can do many things, such as:

  • Send messages
  • Ask questions
  • Set conditions

Likewise, you can also set up WhatsApp Flows. WhatsApp Flows are forms that you can use in your WhatsApp Automations. Here, you can set up what fields you want to use and what button:

Wati Forms

You can also test your chatbot using a free number.

Overall, I think the Wati platform is pretty easy to use. But it can take some time to set up your WhatsApp chatbot. This is mostly because it can take some time before you fully understand how everything works together. Also, the platform uses some confusing terminology:

  • “Chatbots” are actually chatbot flows
  • “WhatsApp flows” are actually forms in WhatsApp

Chatbot Elements

Wati offers the necessary elements to create your chatbot. Among these, I would like to point out you can:

  • Collect data using Questions
  • Set Conditions, which lets you personalize conversations
  • Scale your chatbot by triggering other flows

This is great for personalization and scalability of your chatbot.

In Wati, you can see all the contacts that talked to your chatbot in one overview:

Wati Contacts

When you click on a contact, you can see their information, such as name, phone number and any attributes you have set up:

Wati Individual ContactWithin Wati, you can create your own custom fields (called “Attributes”) and add these to your contacts.

Wati AI Features

Wati offers two AI features: keyword-recognition and an AI Knowledge Base (called a Knowbot).

Keyword recognition means that if someone uses a specific keyword, such as “book a demo”, you can reply with your chatbot.

Wati Keyword Action

With the KnowBot, you can train the chatbot on a knowledge base, such as files or website URLs. Then, the bot can automatically answer questions based on the data it has been trained on.

Wati Adding Knowledge to KnowBot

This allows you to create an AI agent within minutes, fully trained on the knowledge of your business.

If the KnowBot can’t answer, or thinks the user wants to talk to a human, you can set up Rules for that. This allows you to use the Knowbot and chatbot flows together:

Wati Creating Rules for KnowBot

Keyword recognition
Trigger chatbot flow based on certain words or phrases a user says to the chatbot.
Intents
Trigger a chatbot flow by understanding the intent of the user.
Entities

Wati Live Chat

If you want to hand over the conversation to a team member, Wati has a built-in Live chat. This is called the Team Inbox and you can see all of the conversations here:

Wati Team Inbox

I think it looks great. You have your live chat in the middle, and the customer information on the right. It’s clean and intuitive.

Also, Wati has auto-assignment rules. This means you can automatically assign conversations to specific teams or people.

Marketing

In terms of marketing possibilities, Wati offers:

  • Website widget
  • WhatsApp Message Templates
  • WhatsApp Broadcasts
  • Sequences
  • Rules

Wati offers a website widget:

Wati Website Widget

Additionally, Wati offers WhatsApp Message Templates, which allows you to start conversations with WhatsApp Broadcasts.

Broadcasts let you send a message to all or a part of your chatbot users at a specific date and time. They also have a lot of templates, which is great to get started quickly:

Wati Broadcasts

With a Sequence, you can send a set of messages with a specified time in between:

Wati Sequences

Using Rules, you can automatically do something when an action happens. For example, when someone schedules an appointment, you can send them a reminder 24 hours before.

Unfortunately, Wati doesn’t offer any marketing features for Instagram and Facebook, which is a drawback.

Broadcasts
Send a message to all or a part of your chatbot users at a specific date and time
Sequences
Send messages on a pre-defined schedule with a certain time interval between those messages

Wati Analytics

Wati’s analytics are pretty decent, though not amazing. You get some useful information, such as:

  • How many people talk to your chatbot
  • The volume
  • Total messages

Wati Analytics

However, they don’t actually explain how good your flows are. You can’t see which flows are performing well, and which should be improved. That’s definitely a drawback.

Wati also doesn’t give you information on questions people asked, and that your chatbot couldn’t answer.
